I love the sounds words make when strung together by literary artists who know what to do with them. The writers in this anthology are in that school of brilliant poets, fiction writers, and essayists who turn a phrase into magic, make language dance on its page. In these stories and poems, the students take risks. They don’t take the easy road to get to their truth; there are no shortcuts here. For two weeks, we met for three hours each day as the students published here made the most of the experience by committing themselves to write
pieces that dazzle. They supported each other and gave tremendous feedback to their fellow writers. After the first day, instructors and interns were turning their faces into smiles saying, “Wow, they’re good!” And they are. It was our pleasure to teach them, to write with them, and to learn from them for two weeks. Please feel free to leave a positive, encouraging comment on their work. Thanks to all the students, instructors, and interns that made High School Young Writers 2012 a beautiful experience that none of us will soon forget.
